When an add-on item / free gift is set to share inventory with the main product, the system will simultaneously deduct inventory from both the add-on item / free gift and the main product when a customer places an order.
This article will cover the following:
1. How to set up shared inventory
i. Add-ons
Go to SHOPLINE Admin > [Product & Categories] > [Add-ons] to create or edit an existing add-on product.
Check the "Select existing product to sell as add on item" box in the "Add-on Item Info" tab. For more information, please refer to: Create Add-on Items.
*Note: Currently, add-on items can only share inventory with products with no variations. Products with multiple variations are not supported. If variations are added to the main product, the system will automatically disable the shared inventory setting.
ii. Free gifts
Go to SHOPLINE Admin > [Product & Categories] > [Free Gifts] and click Add to create free gift.
Check the "Select existing product to sell as gift item" box and select a product from the pop-up window.
*Notes:
- Once the free gift is added, the selected product cannot be changed or removed.
- Currently, free gifts can only share inventory with products with no variations. Products with multiple variations are not supported. If variations are added to the main product, the system will automatically disable the shared inventory setting.
[Coming Soon] The Admin path for the free gift feature has been updated. The new version of free gifts does not require shared inventory settings. For more information, please refer to: Free Gift (New).
Shared inventory calculation example
Store setup:
- Product "Cozy Glass Cup": Also set as a free gift, inventory = 10
- Add-on item "+$99 Add-on Cozy Glass Cup": Share inventory with main product "Cozy Glass Cup"
Customer order:
- Product "Delicate Spoon"
- Add-on item "+$99 Add-on Cozy Glass Cup"
- Free gift "Cozy Glass Cup"
Inventory change:
- "Cozy Glass Cup" inventory 10 - 2 = 8
- Deduct 1 unit for the add-on item "+$99 Add-on Cozy Glass Cup"
- Deduct 1 unit for the free gift "Cozy Glass Cup"
2. How to add variations to a shared inventory product
Step 1
Go to [Products & Categories] > [Products]. Click the Edit button next to the product.
Step 2
Enable the "Variations" toggle in the "Variations" tab.
*Note: After completing the following settings, the shared inventory will be removed, and the add-on item will revert to independent inventory.
Step 3
Set the quantity for the add-on item / free gift after disabling shared inventory, check "I understand canceling share inventory cannot be undone, and I am sure I want to delete it!" and click the OK button.
*Note: Even if you do not click the Update button, the system will immediately disable the shared inventory setting once you click Confirm in the pop-up window.
