Google Search Console is a free Google tool that shows how your store performs in Google Search, flags indexing issues, and helps your pages stand out in search results. You will learn how to verify your SHOPLINE store with Google Search Console using an HTML tag, then submit your store's sitemap so Google can crawl your product and content pages.
In this article, you'll find:
1. Verify Google Search Console (Administrator)
Step 1. Go to Google Search Console
Go to Google Search Console and click Start now to verify your domain property.
Step 2. Select the property type
Select "URL prefix" and enter your store URL in the field. For example:
- If your URL is www.abc.com, enter https://www.abc.com
- If your URL is shop.def.com, enter https://shop.def.com
Once you are done, click Continue.
Step 3. Select the verification method
Under "Other verification methods", select the "HTML tag" option.
Step 4. Copy the HTML tag
The HTML tag will display as follows. Click Copy.
Step 5. Paste the tag into the SHOPLINE Admin
In the SHOPLINE Admin, go to [Settings] > [Basic Settings] > "Third Party Domain Tools", paste the tag you just copied into the "Google Search Console" field, and click Update in the lower right.
*Note: After pasting the tag, keep only the alphanumeric code between the two quotation marks of "content=", and delete the surrounding text, quotation marks, and other symbols.
Step 6. Check the Shop Status
After pasting the tag into the "Google Search Console" field, scroll up the page and check your current "Shop Status". It must be "Open" before you can complete the verification.
If your shop status is "Closed", you can change it to "Open" in the drop-down menu and click Update in the lower right.
Step 7. Complete the verification
Return to Google Search Console and click Verify. Once your site is verified, you will see the following screen.
2. Submit a sitemap
A sitemap is a file that helps Google and other search engines understand the structure of your website's content. For more details, please refer to Learn about sitemaps. Once you finish building your store, SHOPLINE automatically creates a sitemap for your online store in the format "store URL/sitemap.xml". For example:
- If your store URL is https://www.testshopline.com
- Then your sitemap is https://www.testshopline.com/sitemap.xml
Step 1. Go to the Sitemaps page
Sign in to Google Search Console and click Sitemaps in the left menu.
Step 2. Submit the sitemap
Enter "sitemap.xml" in the "Add a new sitemap" field and click Submit.
After you successfully submit the sitemap, you can see the status displayed as "Success" in the "Submitted sitemaps" section.
*Notes:
- When you update products or pages in the Admin, the changes are not reflected in the sitemap immediately. The sitemap file is updated every 6 hours, and Google Search Console then reads the sitemap data and crawls your site according to its own schedule.
- A sitemap only helps search engines understand your site structure. What actually appears in search results is still determined by Google.
