1. Concepts and definitions
i. What is Smart 3D?
Smart 3D is a dynamic security authentication mechanism that adjusts the verification rate flexibly between 0% and 100% based on real-time risk assessment. The system requests additional authentication (such as an SMS one-time password) only for transactions identified as medium or high risk, while most low-risk transactions can be completed without verification, significantly improving the overall payment flow.
Unlike traditional 3DS, which applies full authentication to every transaction, Smart 3D uses intelligent analysis to evaluate transaction risk and triggers authentication only when suspicious activity is detected. This results in a more secure transaction environment, fewer payment interruptions, and higher conversion rates.
ii. Comparison of Smart 3D
SHOPLINE Payments has developed a dynamic Smart 3D authentication strategy based on operational experience in payment processing. The solution is designed to address merchants' needs to improve transaction authorization rates while maintaining security and optimizing the payment experience.
Smart 3D |
100% 3D |
Comparison |
|
| Authentication method | AI-based dynamic risk evaluation with intelligent 3DS triggering. | Static rules; full 3DS authentication for all transactions. | Improves conversion rate. |
| User experience | Most low-risk transactions are completed without friction. | Authentication is performed through SMS or email. Transactions may fail if the code is not received or if the user encounters a redirect page. | Optimizes the payment experience. |
| Security | Multi-layer AI models with real-time data insights. | Basic authentication that is more vulnerable to attacks. | Strengthens fraud defense. |
| Fraud prevention | Some fraud scenarios may not always be detectable by the system. | Fraud-related chargebacks may have liability shift. However, other chargeback types may still occur. | Post-dispute representment is available, and the overall fraud rate remains very low. |
Smart 3DS uses AI-based algorithms to assess transaction risk and decide whether to decline the transaction, trigger 3DS authentication, or allow it to proceed as non-3DS. This approach provides the following capabilities:
Accurately identifies and blocks high-risk transactions, helping control fraud-related notifications and avoid reaching card scheme fraud alert thresholds.
Reduces actual fraud losses through precise, real-time risk assessment.
Supports dynamic authentication decisions under the 3DS 2.0 protocol, improving authorization performance and contributing to higher merchant revenue.
Enhances the customer payment experience and improves order conversion rates.
Performs post-authorization review on high-risk transactions and issues timely fraud alerts, reducing potential future losses and supporting end-to-end risk management.
iii. How Smart 3D improves authorization rates and ensures transaction security
A. Reducing payment interruptions and minimizing user drop-off
By skipping authentication for most low-risk transactions, Smart 3D reduces user abandonment caused by redirects or verification steps and increases order completion rates.
B. Focusing authentication resources to improve processing efficiency
Only transactions with identified risk go through 3D authentication. This allows security resources to be concentrated, helping reduce authentication failures and improve overall accuracy.
C. Balancing security and user experience
The system efficiently blocks the majority of fraudulent transactions (with a fraud defense rate of over 90%) while maintaining a smooth payment experience for customers, achieving a balance between security and usability.
iv. Considerations for merchants before enabling Smart 3D
A. Low-level risk possibility
The system prioritizes reducing friction and improving the payment experience, and therefore tends to skip authentication for most low-risk transactions. Although the overall fraud interception rate is very high, there is still a theoretical possibility that a small number of fraudulent transactions may be misclassified as low risk and pass without authentication, resulting in no liability shift to the cardholder side.
B. Challenges for customers accustomed to traditional authentication
If customers are accustomed to all transactions going through 3DS authentication (such as an SMS one-time password), shifting to automated risk-based decisioning may initially create concerns about security because the verification step is no longer visible. Customers may need time to adjust and develop trust in the system's judgment.
SHOPLINE Payments' Smart 3D fully supports the 3DS 2.0 protocol. For transactions determined by the AI decision engine to require 3DS authentication, the system automatically adjusts to the 3DS 2.0 frictionless flow when supported by the issuing bank, allowing customers to receive fraud protection while maintaining a smoother payment experience.
C. Dependence on system accuracy
The effectiveness of Smart 3D relies on the risk models and the quality of the data used. Although SHOPLINE Payments collaborates with professional risk management service providers and continuously improves its models, the performance remains dependent on ongoing system updates and its ability to learn from emerging fraud patterns.
2. FAQ
i. Which merchants are suitable for Smart 3D?
Suitable for merchants who prioritize transaction authorization performance, revenue growth, and a smooth customer payment experience. This includes:
- Merchants in a rapid growth phase with higher customer acquisition costs.
- Merchants that emphasize a seamless and convenient payment experience as part of their brand.
- Business types with high payment frequency, moderate to lower average order values, and short product sales cycles.
- Merchants with specific targets related to authorization rates or GPV.
Example:
A merchant with an annual GMV of NT$10 million and an average order value of NT$1,000 improves its transaction authorization rate from 75% to 85% after adopting Smart 3D. The increase in authorization success results in an additional NT$1 million in revenue.
If the average fraud rate in Taiwan is 0.1%, the estimated hidden fraud loss would be approximately NT$10,000. Comparing both figures, the merchant's net additional revenue is NT$990,000.
ii. Will reducing verification steps decrease security?
There is no reduction in security. Smart 3D does not remove authentication; it applies authentication more intelligently.
SHOPLINE Payments works with the global fraud management provider Cybersource (This article is available in Traditional Chinese only) and performs extensive risk assessment using AI before the payment is processed. This ensures that security is not compromised compared with traditional verification methods. Smart 3D requires authentication only for high-risk transactions and provides a faster payment experience for low-risk customers.
iii. Customers are concerned that the absence of OTP verification increases fraud risk
Smart 3D applies more than one hundred security checks. For low-risk transactions, SMS authentication is not required in order to improve the payment experience. When a transaction is identified as risky, the system still applies full authentication.
SHOPLINE Payments is certified at PCI DSS Level 1, the highest level of international security standards. Cardholder information is fully encrypted and protected, and neither merchants nor the platform store any sensitive data.
iv. How Smart 3D determines which transactions require verification
The core of Smart Fraud Management is real-time fraud detection. The Decision Manager system used by SHOPLINE Payments performs more than 260 checks on each transaction. It also uses machine learning to improve its risk models based on billions of transactions processed each year. The entire screening process takes less than 600 milliseconds on average.
